“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss

This story was a huge inspiration to me as a child. The masterful rhythm and rhyme - and vivid, imaginative characters - are what inspired me to write children’s books in verse. I could honestly read this book aloud by myself all day long! Fortunately my children can’t get enough of this timeless classic so I get to enjoy the Grinch’s magic all over again!

“Douglas the Pinecone’s Christmas Crunch” by: Allison McWood

This adorably weird little story is special to me because it relates the magic of Christmas to the magic of nature. The main character is a Pinecone which ironically is something that reminds me of Christmas. When I was a student (and lacking adequate funds for Christmas shopping) I used to make little gifts for friends out of things I collected from the forest - including flannel-garbed Pinecone people. Ever since, I have wanted to bring my Pinecone characters to life in the form of storytelling. I even used the theme of gift-giving as a wink to the story’s origin - Douglas the Pinecone struggles to come up with the perfect Christmas gift for his friends, learning that the perfect gift can be made with lots of heart and imagination.

“Donna & Blitzen” by: Allison McWood

Being an animal lover, I couldn’t resist writing about Santa’s reindeer. I’m sure you’ve noticed that not all of the reindeer get equal representation so I felt it was time to give some love to Blitzen. Any child who has ever felt left out will be encouraged by this inspirational tale of holiday magic, human/animal connection and unlikely friendships. Plus it rhymes!
