I'm currently featured on Literary Classics' Author Spotlight Blog, where I am interviewed about my picture book, Tamara Turtle's Life So Far, which won a silver medal from Literary Classics (in the Educational category)!
From the Literary Classics blog: HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR YOUR AWARD WINNING BOOK? I volunteer with the Toronto Humane Society, and when I was working to enrich the animals in the Special Species Department, I noticed that all the turtles (and they were all Red-eared Sliders at the time) had a great deal of trouble getting adopted. Some had already been there for a year or more (there are some there still since the book was published), and though THS has created wonderful habitats for them to thrive in during their stay there, it’s not the same as having a permanent home. I wanted to create a story that would teach kids and their parents about the responsibility and commitment involved in caring for a pet like this, and if they determine they can properly look after a turtle its whole life, to adopt one that really needs a home. Mirror World Publishing has some great titles coming out in 2020, including my latest picture book (this time with co-author Kevin Risk, who also happens to be my hubby!) Libby the Lobivia Jajoiana! Gord Bagshaw is finishing up the absolutely INCREDIBLE illustrations as we speak! For now, please enjoy some preliminary drafts of Libby below (she's great here, but she's even BETTER in the final illustrations!)... From the Mirror World Publishing blog: Mirror World's 2020 Line Up! Happy New Year! It’s a brand new year (our seventh, in fact) and we’ve got a brand new list of upcoming releases for you to get excited about! Last year we kicked things off with a local Windsor author and her debut middle grade novel set in Windsor, Ontario; Karen Koski’s The Gimmal Ring. Then we had a children’s picture book from M|W author, Regan W.H. Macaulay and the talented artist Alex Zgud, Beverlee Beaz, the Brown Burmese, which we later also released in French! Then came the second in Sharon Ledwith’s Mysterious Tales from Fairy Falls series, Blackflies and Blueberries, a teen psychic mystery. And we also brought you Shelf Life from a new addition to the Mirror World family, Rob Gregson. Then in the fall we released the sequel to Karen McCreedy’s Unreachable Skies trilogy: Exile, and Felix Eddy’s hardcover art book, A Bestiary Alphabet. And now it’s 2020. And we have another great line up for you... Read the rest on Mirror World's blog...click HERE!
Beverlee Beaz the Brown Burmese Regan W.H. Macaulay Mirror World Publishing (2019) ISBN: 9781987976526 Reviewed by Lydia Dehning (age 6) for Reader Views Kids (11/19) “Beverlee Beaz the Brown Burmese” by Regan W.H. Macaulay is about a cat named Beverlee Beaz who has an active imagination. Beverlee gets out of the house and starts walking. She sees the trees and the running water, then she sees a butterfly. The butterfly turns into a parrot from the Amazon rainforest! Then Beverlee sees a rabbit under a bush, and it becomes a kangaroo that she chases around. Beverlee trips and lands in the pond where she sees a frog. The frog then becomes a Komodo dragon! I really like Komodo dragons, so this one was fun to see in the book. Then Beverlee bumps into a beehive and the bees start chasing her, but they turn into hungry Pterodactyls! Last, she sees a unicorn standing in front of her, and it kind of scares her with its horn so long. After the unicorn helps Beverlee out of trouble, she realizes that it’s not so bad, or a unicorn, after all. Beverlee had a fun but busy day with her imagination. This was a fun book to read because of all of the interesting animals that Beverlee imagined. I liked all of the animals, and I liked how Beverlee was able to know that the animals weren’t really scary ones like she imaged them to be, but instead they were less scary. I think kids of all ages will like this book – I did, and my three-year-old brother did too." A Note from Mom: "This is a very cute book about how your imagination can become very realistic. It is good that the author was able to show Beverlee understanding that it was just her imagination while allowing her to have fun at the times her imagination was taking over, as well. I agree with Lydia that this is a book for any age with the imaginative choice of animals, and the beautifully drawn pictures to look at." |
