5.0 out of 5 stars - Beware! If you your kid reads this book, they will want to go to New Zealand tomorrow!

Peter Little Wing is a masterfully written middle grade novel about a kiwi named Peter and a ragtag group of rescued Aquarium animals in New Zealand. They escape their habitats to search the wop-wop (wilderness) for an elixir that will save Peter's ill grandfather. The charming characters are endearing and will be relatable to young readers. This story is like Finding Nemo meets the Wizard of Oz set in the stunning backdrop of the New Zealand wilderness. Kids will learn NZ lingo and about the diversity and uniqueness of the flora and fauna of this country. Peter Little Wing would make a wonderful animated movie!

Reading age: 8-12
Genre: realistic fiction

Peter Little Wing is a kiwi bird kept in captivity in the New Zealand National Aquarium. His species originates from a forest named the wop wops. One day, his Nandy falls ill, and the only cure for him is a nursery rhyme that requires the ingredients found in the wop wops. Peter embarks on a journey to the wop wops to save his Nandy, with his friends Tim, Onion, and Rangi accompanying him. During his journey, Peter learns the value of friendship and how to be a good leader.

This book left a lasting impression on me. Peter’s character was particularly fascinating, as was his ambitious personality and unwavering determination. I admired  how he looked out for his Nandy, who was lucky to have someone like him in his life.

However, the character of Rangi was a bit irritating, always trying to take the lead and hog the spotlight, even when it was unnecessary. Onion, on the other hand, was a sweet and gentle soul who always tried to keep the peace between Peter and Rangi. I also found Tim’s character quite amusing. He was afraid of everything, which made for some hilarious situations.

The book was well-illustrated, which helped me visualize the story better. Although the beginning was a bit slow, the story picked up pace as it progressed, making it more enjoyable. I formed a deep connection with all the characters, a testament to the author’s excellent writing skills.

Overall, it was a fantastic book, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining and insightful read.

Happy Reading, Laly ❤️ 📚

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need are friends!

Peter is a young tokoeka kiwi living in the National Aquarium in New Zealand. His grandfather is ill and the humans don't seem to be able to make him well. Through songs and rhymes passed down through the generations, Peter knows what he needs so sets off with his three friends (a blue penguin with an inner-ear imbalance, a tuatara with an anxiety disorder and a kea whose wings have been clipped) into the strange outside world to get the ingredients. Along the way they have adventures.

In addition to being a cute story directed at middle-grade children, it is also a excellent tool for learning about a different part of the world ... in the back of the book there is a section with terms and explanations along with a glossary of terms for a non New Zealand and British audience. There are lots of beautiful illustrations that are very detailed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readers will Learn about New Zealand Animals

Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024Three animal friends from New Zealand leave the safety of the National Aquarium to find ingredients for an elixir that will cure Peter's (a kiwi bird) ailing grandfather. After escaping the aquarium, they have a wild adventure across New Zealand, facing all sorts of dangers and meeting other native animals.

Told in the lingo common to New Zealand speakers, it immerses readers in the culture of New Zealand and introduces them to the flora and fauna of the country. The extensive end material gives more information about the animals in the story and explains the unfamiliar words.

Middle-grade readers who are interested in learning about New Zealand wildlife and enjoy animal stories will enjoy this book.

Amazing story for kids and adults!

PETER LITTLE WING is a chapter book for middle grade readers. It is the story of Peter, a kiwi, and his band of misfit friends who set out on an adventure to locate the ingredients needed to cure Peter’s grandfather, Nandy Enzo, who is very ill. The journey takes them through many ups and downs, all the while solidifying their bonds of friendship in the multitude of stories that twist and turn throughout their adventure.

Peter recruits his closest friends from the National Aquarium where they live in captivity—Onion, a little blue penguin with an inner ear disturbance; Tim, a tuatara with Generalized Anxiety Disorder; and Rangi, a kea with clipped wings. Along the way, they meet Pō, a Green and Golden Bell frog; and Andrew, a possum daring death on a bridge. Together, the band of six friends work to listen for “The Deep Understanding” to solve the riddles of the needed ingredients and attempt to find them. But will they? And, if so, will they be able to make it back to the aquarium in time to save Nandy Enzo?

Sprinkled throughout the entire book are tidbits of information for kids (and adults) to learn about the unique animals of New Zealand as well as the interesting language and slang of this island country. Macaulay uses fun language (definitions can be found in a glossary at the end of the book) and beautiful imagery (“mosses, mulch, and shrub clusters formed a patchwork forest quilt”) throughout which really paint a picture of the characters and setting.

While this story is animal based, the stories of these friends very similarly mimic that of humans in many ways making it very relatable for kids…from the relationships amongst family, to living with and accepting other’s ailments, our desire to belong, and the passing down of family stories from generation to generation, interwoven over time.

The fact that this is Ms. Macaulay’s first MG chapter book is remarkable. She weaves a terrific story using wonderful language to create vivid images and set the scenes very well, ultimately creating a book that is difficult to put down. I highly recommend it and believe readers will also love it.

Gordon Bagshaw’s illustrations help bring the story and friends to life, adding an important part of the world in which these friends are weaving their stories.

The story of this group of misfit friends on a mission to help a friend and encounter the adventure of a lifetime through the “middle of nowhere” is excellent. Macaulay uses these relatable animals to teach subtle lessons about how to treat others in such a way that readers will find themselves rooting for the characters without realizing they are also learning valuable life lessons. There are so many surprising twists and turns on the adventure beyond the “Walls of Shadows,” all the while demonstrating the bonds of friendship and ultimate importance of treating others the way one wants to be treated. Well done!
