I heard from the MidWest Book Review over the weekend letting me know of some more glowing reviews of both Merry Myrrh, the Christmas Bat and Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast! I have already posted about Merry Myrrh's review in Story Monsters Ink, but check this out from The Christmas Shelf: Myrrh is a young and very merry brown bat named after one of the gifts of the Magi. He experiences the wonders of his first Christmas among the decorations of a farmhouse, as well as the kindness of the family that discovers him in their home in "Merry Myrrh, The Christmas Bat"! An original Christmas story by author Regan W. H. Macaulay and charmingly illustrated by Alex Zgud, "Merry Myrrh, The Christmas Bat" is a wonderfully entertaining read that is very highly recommended for family, daycare center, preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, and community library picture book collections for children ages 4 to 7. "Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast" is a curious children's tale told in fun-filled prose and colorful comic panel portraits of a small red demon monster who lives on stolen chicken eggs at Riverdale Farm. Mixter Twizzle seems like a possible Gollum-like character or villain at first, but the story takes readers through a journey of transformation that changes Mixter Twizzle from a self involved gourmet egg thief, to a loving, concerned vegetarian chick parent who helps bring up young chickens for future generations of Riverdale Farm. The closing portrait describes the small red demon imp reformed as follows: "Never again will the beasts of Riverdale Farm fear the impish red devil beneath the barn. To them, he is now Uncle Mixter, valiant, kind and true." The amusing, colorful prose of "Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast" is original and riveting, with expressions like: "The eggsies is coming from under the feathered beasts! My breakfast is ready, by fork and by spork! My breakfast is ready, by fork and by spork! My breakfast arrives, let the minutes come faster! Be hesty! Be hasty!" and "Bleckles!..... Yuckles, I cry, and bletchers, I moan." Taken in total, "Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast" is a metamorphosis account that traces the mystery and fear accompanying a gradual transformation from selfish demon to a loving, caring being.
