Cancelling Christmas

We cancelled Christmas, to save a few lives
As a plague was spreading across the earth.
We are a society, WE MUST SURVIVE.
Even Christmas, it seemed, had lost it's worth.
 
Cancel the presents! And cancel the tree!
Cancel the stockings! And cancel the feast!
Cancel Rudolf! Someone shouted with glee.
(The truth is, I will miss that one the least)
 
The Grinch was dancing in the streets with glee
Scrooge had a maniacal grin on his face.
Santa went on holiday to the Caribbean Sea.
(Or he would have, there's a travel ban in place.)
 
There were some who shouted out, it's not fair!
We're a free people and we know our rights!
We have guns and Facebook! We are aware!
That you can't take away our Christmas lights!
 
Someone said: A million people have died.
What will you celebrate? That there weren't more?
Do you think that He who for your sins died,
Would think you were anything but a bore?
 
Truth be told, I think Christmas is a pain.
It's a tribute to children who are already spoiled.
Perhaps one day, I'll enjoy it again
When our reputation isn't so soiled.
 
Say Merry Christmas in a whisper this year.
Remember you are made of sterner stuff.
Celebrate with more hope and little less cheer.
We will survive, and that will be enough.
