Day 4 of the 12 Adoptable Pets of the Holiday Season...Smokey & Cheeky are available TOGETHER through the Parrot Sanctuary!

12/16/2024

The Parrot Sanctuary is registered as a not-for-profit organization under the name of "Sammy and Oscar’s Parrot Sanctuary". It is named after the first birds taken in, back in 2004.
Today, the Parrot Sanctuary is a parrot rescue, sanctuary and educational care centre, located in Toronto, Canada. They are a registered Not For Profit corporation.
The Parrot Sanctuary mission is to improve the well being of companion parrots, for the benefit of both the birds and their humans.
Their goal is to help people provide a stimulating and healthy life for their companion parrots, in their home. When the parrots are not able to stay in their current home, they work to find a new home for them. Service goals include:
  • helping parrot owners, who may feel overwhelmed
  • supporting people to learn about healthy and positive parrot care, through education and resources
  • rescue, rehabilitate and rehome parrots to qualified loving homes when possible
  • providing a permanent home to birds in need of sanctuary
Given the demands on our limited budget and volunteer team for proper vet care, nutrition, and accommodation, we are unable to take in all of the “unwanted” parrots that people approach us with. We do our best to help them keep their birds, and/or find alternatives.
The facility is not open to the public, but may be visited by appointment and donation.

  • Name: Smokey (moustache parakeet) and Cheeki (green cheek conure)
  • Species: Moustache Parakeet and Green Cheek Conure
  • Age: exact ages unknown but both birds are young
  • Health status: both Smokey and Cheeki have no known health concerns, Smokey does occasionally require some beak trimming from his veterinarian.

  • Well socialized: Yes, they are both well socialized and friendly. Smokey is always eager to meet new people and loves to fly to shoulders and heads. He can be insistent about being on his chosen person so working with him to ensure he is gentle about it is important. Cheeki is more reserved and takes time to warm up to new people. Once used to them she is friendly and happy for shoulder rides and head scratches.
  • Good with other birds: Yes, both Smokey and Cheeki are easy going and live well in a community of similar sized birds. They willingly share out of cage perches and play areas. They are fearless about landing on other birds cages and extra care should be taken if they are living with birds larger than them.
  • Other Pets: Both Smokey and Cheeki fly and like to explore the floor. They are best suited to a home with no cats, dogs or other predatory species.
  • Good with kids: Smokey and Cheeki haven’t had recent experience with young children. They are both friendly and outgoing birds and would be fine with older children however the can be eager to land on people and should be well supervised with younger children.
  • Diet: Both Smokey and Cheeki eat a diet of pellets, some healthy seeds and grains, nuts, cooked foods, fruit and veggies. That will happily eat just about anything offered and their current favourites are peanuts, almonds and grapes.
  • Bio: Smokey and Cheeki are happy, outgoing and cheerful birds. They would love an active home with a family that has plenty of time for play and excercise. They would live easily with other birds or as the only two in the home. Smokey can be a little insistent about shoulders so a home that is understanding, patient and not fearful if he gets overstimulated would be ideal. They are sweet birds who are looking for a family where they will get plenty of enrichment, love and attention. They. Annoy be separated and must be adopted together.

Little RES Q is Ontario's first registered charity reptile rescue specializing in one of the world's most misunderstood animals, the Red-eared Slider.
Starting life as a coin sized pet, sliders often grow up to a foot in length and require aquariums larger than most people assume, and many of these creatures find their way into local streams and rivers.
As a small privately-run shelter that does not receive any formal government assistance, we rely solely on donations from the public to continue our mission to provide a temporary shelter for pet turtles, lizards and snakes that are looking for their forever homes.

Meet Little Lily! This sweet, tiny girl has a big heart and an incredible story. She spent her early years on the streets, not only looking out for herself but also raising a litter of kittens. Despite the tough start, she's proven to be a resilient and loving mama.

When Lily was rescued, she needed urgent medical care, and after two surgeries, it was discovered she has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Luckily, with the right diet, she's now happy, healthy, and full of life! Lily adores her treats and will happily purr, knead like she's making biscuits, and rub against your hand for more. She likes pets too!

Lily is currently in a foster home with other cats, but she would thrive in a quiet space with a patient, experienced cat lover who can give her the time and attention she deserves. After all she's been through, Lily is ready to receive the love and care she missed out on for so long. She would blossom as a solo cat in the home, but with the right introduction she could do well with a calm, laid-back buddy cat.

Are you the special person who can give Little Lily her forever home? She's waiting to meet you!

Lily has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which has previously resulted in a prolapsed anus that needed to be corrected surgically through a procedure called a colopexy. In order to manage Lily's IBD and prevent future issues, she needs to be on a prescription hypoallergenic diet. Lily may also have mild asthma, which is managed with a steroid medication given every other day, which is easily placed in her food.. She is negative for FIV and feline leukemia. Like all ACR cats, Lily has been treated for fleas and parasites.

Check out a video of Lily getting pets and treats while making biscuits: https://vimeo.com/1002244846?share=copy

Lily's adoption fee is covered by a generous donation from Mowgli in celebration of finding his forever home!

I interviewed director Lisa Ovies and writer Kevin Mosley back in October 2021! They work together fairly often, but their most recent collaboration at the time was the super fun and most excellent Puppet Killer! Please note there is coarse language and a few images that may be disturbing to some (particularly young) viewers. Here's Part 1...
And here is Part 2 of my interview with Lisa Ovies and Kevin Mosley, director and writer respectively of the above mentioned Puppet Killer. We talked about other films, other issues, and Halloween stuff, too! Again, please note there is coarse language and a few images that may be disturbing to some (particularly young) viewers.

You can also check out my first "Puppet Killer" (at BITS 2019) Interview:
