Kit Daven’s heart beats for the eerie and the extraordinary in her tales. Even her sci fantasy series, which begins with The Forgotten Gemstone, unfolds in The Other Castle, and culminates in The Starry Rise, possesses demonly threads running through the trans-dimensional landscape. Her most recent work, The Arrest in Mannequin Row, steps out of the fantasy realm into an urban one, where the living and dead collide in a town beneath the lake waters. Other dark tales include a giant spider in Spider Spun and a cautionary tale on the right way and the wrong way to eat people in The Cannibal’s Handbook. In senior high school, Kit wore a hooded robe to every Halloween dance because it was less work. Nowadays, she prefers to celebrate Halloween carving pumpkins and watching horror movies with her husband and her feline familiars amidst the quiet hills of Hespeler, Ontario.

Another classic twist on a classic fairytale, in this case, The Princess and the Pea! Quite a practical parody, as Sweet Pea has to do to get herself down from a pile of mattresses in order to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
The Prince and his mother the Queen are testing Sweet Pea to make sure she’s a real princess by placing one pea, then a pile of peas, then more, under more and more mattresses each night Sweet Pea sleeps over. Unfortunately, Sweet Pea keeps finding the peas under the mattresses and eating them, washing them down with a glass of milk. This means she has to get up in the middle of the night every night, climb down the multiple mattresses, and dash to the bathroom before peeing her pants (she always makes it in time—phew!). But since Princesses never pee their pants, Sweet Pea still manages to prove her “princessness”!
Another adorable and funny story by Rosie Amazing with equally adorable illustrations by Andreea Balcan.
