13 Horrifically Silly Days of Halloween, Day 2, Justine Alley Dowsett & Mirror World Publishing10/20/2019
Welcome to Day 2 of these most ludicrous and horrific days of Halloween! Today, I have a written interview for you, where I interrogate genre author and publisher at Mirror World Publishing, Justine Alley Dowsett! You can see my Facebook Live promoting this post HERE!
Regan: Hello and welcome, Justine! Would you give me your personal summary of Mirror World Publishing?
Justine: Mirror World Publishing is a small independent publishing house based in Windsor, Ontario. We publish quality paperbacks and ebooks of escapism fiction for all ages that feature other worlds, times and versions of reality. We pride ourselves on our originality and 'outside the box' thinking, while taking a good look at the question, 'what if?' Our stories are never ordinary, the dialogue and action engaging, the characters believable, and there will always be some element of romance, adventure, science or magic. We are dedicated to bring our readers novels that will not only entertain them, but also teach them something about the world they live in by showing them one that mirrors it. We hope you’ll consider picking up a novel from our collection so you can see for yourself what we’re all about. You'll find a wide variety of our wonderful titles in our bookstore and you can also purchase or review them through most major retailers worldwide. If you want to know more about us, feel free to contact us. We are very active on Facebook and our blog as well. Regan: Tell me about some of your favourite horror or genre stories/short stories published by Mirror World? Justine: We’re not supposed to pick favourites, but the funniest book in our whole collection is This Night Sucks by Elizabeth J.M. Walker, hands down. This Night Sucks is a novella for teens, set in a small Canadian town where nothing exciting ever happens. In fact, although Vampires are a very real threat in this world, they are so mundane and commonplace that there’s a high school course on how to deal with any bloodsuckers you might come across. As the author puts it, Vampires are a lot like other scary things that supposedly exist but you hope you’ll never come across: nudist colonies, mad cow disease, and your parents’ sex life. I know the Vampire thing has by now become a tired trope, but I urge you to try Elizabeth J.M. Walker’s novella because it knows Vampires are overplayed and somehow it still manages to make them hilarious. Welcome, welcome, welcome, as John Oliver would say, to the first of my 13 blog series of posts celebrating the Horrifically Silly and the Ludicrously Terrifying elements of Halloween...be they books, movies, events or festivals...(to see my Facebook Live promoting this post, click HERE)... We begin with Daniel from Eyesore Cinema, an independent video store that stocks hard to find, less than mainstream movies (mostly in the horror or genre vein). They also sell books, magazines and a few other items of merchandise...plus there's an awesome cinema and event space in the back for screening the worst and most fun of B-movies, and whatever else they damn well feel like! October 19th is not only the first day of Halloween, it is also International Independent Video Store Day, which makes Eyesore Cinema the best choice to start the series. Check out my interview with Daniel, proprietor of said store and cinema... Visit Eyesore Cinema's Facebook Page. And find them in "real life" at 1176 Bloor St. West, Toronto, Ontario...be sure to check out their screenings, too. You can find all of the films we mentioned during the interview at Eyesore Cinema! Support local independent video stores! And check out videostoreday.com to find your local indie video store location and more... If you're interested in my series of novellas, the "Trilogy of Horrifically Half-baked Ham," here are the links: Space Zombies! (or Amazon) They Suck (or Amazon) Horror at Terror Creek (or Amazon) ...and now, you can also get these books through Eyesore Cinema! If you'd like your own copy of my very own feature film B-movie parody (including my short film parody, The Scary Bitch Project, in the special features) you can buy the DVD of my feature film, Space Zombies: 13 Months of Brain-Spinning Mayhem! from my website, or through Eyesore Cinema! You can also see Space Zombies: 13 Months of Brain-Spinning Mayhem! through iTunes (rent or buy) Want to check out that song from Horror at Terror Creek that I mentioned? It's called Christopher's Turn, music by Scott McCord (lyrics by me and also Scott McCord), and you'll find it on my Triple Take Productions site! And don't forget to sign up for my NEW EMAIL LIST, tailored specifically to B-movie, horror-comedy and Frankenfiction aficionados like yourself (whether it's a new or casual sort of thing for you or also if you are a hardcore fan). Below, you will find a gallery of photos I took around the shop after shooting the interviews with Kimmie. Some of the covers of videos they stock have been recreated out of necessity, but we're sure glad this is a thing, as are particularly special! And just for a bit of fun...here's that demonic, red-eyed, floating pig from the Amityville Horror... From the Mirror World Publishing website:
"From Al-Mi’raj to Zlatarog, The Bestiary Alphabet features a different mythical creature for every letter of the alphabet, lovingly drawn and illustrated by the talented Felix Eddy. Like the medieval bestiaries of old, the Bestiary Alphabet collects mythological creatures from all over the globe. Some are household names, others are delightful obscurities, but all will move and inspire you to dream of a world that you have never seen. Felix Eddy’s trip through the alphabet will show you the magic, mystery, power and beauty in all the things that might have been. A Bestiary Alphabet is an illustrated guide to mythological creatures for a general audience..." Macaulay, author Alex Zgud, illustrator http://www.reganwhmacaulay.com Mirror World Publishing https://www.mirrorworldpublishing.com 9781987976526, $15.95 PB, $4.99 Kindle, 48pp, www.amazon.com A Best Book Awards finalist, "Beverlee Beaz the Brown Burmese" is an exciting adventure story about a highly imaginative, brown Burmese cat who longs for fresh adventures. Filled with exotic, colorful illustrations of Beverlee's brilliant fantasy transformations of her everyday outside observations, this charming story takes readers on an Iliad rife with entrapments of wonder. On a beautiful sunny day, Beverlee leaves her serene home for an adventure outside. At first she encounters a meadow, hills, trees a splashing river, and Monarch butterflies. Then her fevered imagination takes over and transforms the orange Monarch butterfly to a fiery orange parrot from the Amazon rainforest. This experience continues as she imagines a rabbit to be a jumping kangaroo, and a frog transforms to a deadly Komodo dragon. A nest of bees she jostles changes to a flock of hungry Pterodactyls that pursue Beverlee until she hides in the woods. Then Beverlee encounters the most mystical transformed beast of all, a white unicorn. Frightened, Beverlee retreats and runs until she falls into a hole, hissing and swatting at the unicorn to scare him away. Then another amazing transformation happens - The unicorn tells Beverlee not to be afraid and rescues her from the hole by lowering his horn for her to grab onto, and pulling her out. After that, Beverlee recognized the white unicorn as a white stallion who lived on a farm that was neighbor to hers. She apologized to her rescuer, blaming her overactive imagination. Then the white horse laughed and gave Beverlee a ride on his back all the way home. "Beverlee Beaz the Brown Burmese" is an exciting tale of adventure and fantasy that children will love and identify with. It helps them explore two sides of the beauty and power of imagination and more, the grounding value of friendship. It's here, it's here! My first translated book! Get your copy HERE today!
